Eager to hook states on higher spending, especially for high-speed rail, the Obama administration wants California to quickly spend $3.3 billion of federal funding (much of it borrowed from China, one source of President Obama’s train envy). Simitian says the $3.3 billion is about 5 percent of the cost “if the project stays on budget.” If. The $3.3 billion and $2.7 billion of state money would finance 130 miles of track in the Central Valley—a non-high speed section — a train from, and to, nowhere.

I vaguely remember that at one time Guantanamo, renditions, tribunals, and preventive detention were either of no value or unconstitutional, and trying Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in a civilian court and prosecuting CIA agents for supposedly too harsh interrogations were good. But that was all more than three years in the past, and hundreds of “Make no mistake about it”s and “Let me be perfectly clear”s ago.

Daniel Greenfield writes of giant mosques under construction all around the world. “So long as there’s oil money fueling the projects then the mega mosques will keep on growing. For Muslim states the mega mosque is a tool of power giving them the ability to centralize control of overseas Muslims with a single facility in a single city. For non-Muslim countries, the mega mosque is a center of subversion and terrorism.”

The EMP Threat Is Real, and Growing

These threats are not remote theoretical possibilities, but clear and present dangers. Iran is on the verge of developing, or may already have nuclear weapons…Even more troubling are the prospects of a great geomagnetic storm. The Congressional EMP Commission estimated that a Carrington Event class geomagnetic storm, that would effect the entire world, occurs about once a century. It does not take a genius to do the arithmetic that 1859 was more than a century ago, that we are overdue for another Carrington Event.

Highly resistant gonorrhea — which is to say, gonorrhea that has already become resistant to sulfa drugs, penicillin, tetracycline, and fluoroquinolones such as Cipro, and that is gaining resistance to cephalosporins — is on the rise, from Japan and the USA, and now to Europe…
The EuroSurveillance article underlines why this is bad news:
Effective control of gonorrhoea relies entirely on successful antimicrobial treatment. Untreated infections can lead to severe secondary sequelae, including pelvic inflammatory disease, first trimester abortions, ectopic pregnancy and infertility, and may contribute to facilitating HIV transmission.
Just as icing on the cake, the same journal reports that diagnoses of gonorrhea, and also syphilis, are spiking in England.

Making Rich Democrats “Pay Their Fair Share”
At the Washington Examiner Glenn Reynolds exposes the Democrats’ ratty hypocrisy on taxes, with manifold breaks and privileges for entertainment industries, movie stars and studios, and liberal foundations. He supplies corrective Republican strategies that would surely be popular with voters.
It’s no coincidence that much of the Democrats’ base doesn’t have to worry about taxes much, either because they work for nonprofits and public entities that don’t pay taxes, or because they live off government benefits, or because they work in industries — like the motion picture and recording industries — with a long history of shady accounting and favorable tax treatment. Republicans, if they’re smart, can nonetheless teach them that tax increases do, in fact, hurt.

President Obama’s Election Year U-turn on Israel
At the NY Post Arthur Herman exposes the desperado opportunism of the President:
A year ago, the Obama administration prompted Ed Koch to cross party lines to endorse a Republican in a special House election in protest of President Obama’s Israel policies.
Obama stormed out of a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and called for Israel to negotiate with the Palestinians on the basis of its cramped 1948 borders. Then came public warnings to Israel not to take any military action against a nuclear-arming Iran.
And microphones at the Cannes G-20 summit caught then-French President Nicolas Sarkozy telling Obama that Netanyahu was a liar and our president agreeing, saying, “You’re fed up with him, but I have to work with him every day.”
Recently, however, Obama has been acting as if he and Netanyahu lived on the same kibbutz.
Just as Mitt Romney was leaving for his visit to Jerusalem, Obama announced $70 million in aid to Israel for its anti-missile Iron Dome missile system — an outlay that Obama had not included in his original 2013 budget.
